SMILE vs LASIK in Korea: questions to take to your eye examination
A useful SMILE vs LASIK comparison starts with what your examination shows and what you need your vision to do. A procedure name alone cannot tell you which option fits your eyes. Use this guide to prepare focused questions for an ophthalmologist in Korea and record the answers in a way you can revisit.
Start with the procedural difference
SMILE uses a femtosecond laser to create a lenticule within the cornea, which is removed through a small incision. LASIK involves creating a corneal flap and reshaping underlying tissue with a laser. These are different approaches, and neither description is a personal recommendation.
The JRYN offer discussed on this website is SMILE with VISUMAX 500. Check that the procedure and device stated in your written quotation match what is explained at your appointment. A comparison of equipment names is separate from deciding whether surgery is appropriate.
Bring a description of your visual tasks
Instead of writing only “I want to stop wearing glasses,” list the situations that matter most to you: reading small text at work, prolonged screen tasks, driving after dark, outdoor activities or close-up hobbies. Note what is difficult now and which tasks you cannot easily postpone.
Ask the doctor to connect those priorities to the examination findings. A useful answer explains the proposed option, its limits, alternatives and what may still require glasses. It also leaves room for choosing not to proceed or seeking another opinion.
Use a five-question comparison worksheet
| Question | What to record |
|---|---|
| What findings affect my suitability? | The explanation, any further assessment and what remains uncertain |
| Why is this procedure being proposed? | How it relates to my eyes and visual tasks |
| What limitations and risks should I understand? | Personal concerns, possible side effects and alternatives |
| What care and restrictions will I need? | Written instructions, reviews and activity-specific advice |
| What is included in the quote? | Both-eye price, examination, medicines, visits and additional items |
If an answer depends on a test that has not been performed, mark it “pending assessment.” Do not turn an unanswered question into an assumption of zero cost, no restriction or guaranteed suitability.
Compare complete plans, not just the surgery line
A quotation should identify its currency, date, procedure, equipment and whether it covers one eye or both. JRYN’s confirmed SMILE plan is KRW 2,400,000 for both eyes, including the pre-operative examination, autologous serum, anti-inflammatory and antibiotic eye drops, and free follow-up visits for three months after surgery.
Ask separately about additional supplies, other medicines, extra procedures and care at another clinic. Eye drops follow the doctor’s prescription; included medicines do not create a universal regimen. Obtain a revised written quote if the recommendation changes after assessment.
Make follow-up part of your decision
Before committing to a travel schedule, ask which reviews must take place in Korea and what documents to take home. Confirm who will provide later care, how to arrange it and what charges may apply. The original clinic’s free-review period does not automatically cover another provider.
